Chief James Olu Aboderin, founder of the Punch newspapers was born on the 3rd of September 1934 and died of cancer on the 28th of February 1984, just a few months to his 50th birthday. In celebrating his life as a philanthropist who always sponsored and helped those in need, his children decided to give back to 2 schools: his Primary Alma Mata in Ibadan and another school in Magboro, Ogun state.
On the 27th of Feb, they visited the school in Magboro and gave each student, about a thousand in all- a gift bag containing 2 branded exercise books, a pencil, ruler, eraser, sharpener, a top quality raincoat and a bar of antiseptic soap.
On the 28th of Feb, they went for short prayers at the newly renovated gravesite of their dad at St.David's Church cemetery, Kudeti, Ibadan and also donated gifts to about a thousand students in the Ibadan school and promised to donate more classroom blocks, a fence, a gate, toilets, borehole and a generator.
After all these, they headed back to Lagos to join the Punch staff at their Memorial get together which they creatively tagged, "The Parakoyi Groove" (Their dad's chieftaincy title).
The 3rd and final day was the Legacy Ball: A black tie gala night held on the 1st of March at the Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. A brief documentary of the past 2 days' events was put together and shown that evening, as well as other various aspects of their dad's legacy.
There were: Dance- by Dance Queen Kaffy's Imagneto group
Fashion Showcase of plus size Evening wear for the curvy lady by Temitope Aboderin's JPKingdom
Music- by T.W.O, Omawumi & Dr. SID, with special renditions of their dad's favourite tunes, by Wale Aboderin and Angela Aboderin-Emuwa backed by their band, Rapture.
Then of course there was dinner, dance, fun and more fun! Everybody arrived on time and really balled the night away!! Kudos to the event planner- Elizabeth R and the planning committee made up of Angela, Wunmi & Bunmi.
