News: Based On $$$ & Fame, Beyoncé Tops "Forbes'" Celebrity 100 List; Bruno, JayZ & Riri Also Included

Who runs the world? Beyoncé, of course. Queen Bey tops Forbes' annual Celebrity 100 list of the most powerful celebrities, based on both money and fame. The "fame" part is measured by how many times the star was mentioned in the media in general, and how present and powerful they are on social media specifically.

Beyoncé is #1 on the list not just because she earned $115 million over the past year, but because she's among the most talked-about stars in the business. For example, the star who's #3 on the list, rapper and producer Dr. Dre, earned a ridiculous $620 million in the past year because Apple purchased his company, Beats by Dr. Dre. Yet Beyoncé outranked him, so obviously, cash alone isn't enough to top the power list.

In addition to Beyoncé and Dre, thirteen of the top 25 stars on this year's list are musicians, including Beyonce's husband, Jay-Z, as well as Rihanna and Katy Perry, both of whom are in the top 10. Bon Jovi, Bruno Mars, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Kanye West and Bruce Springsteen also appear on the list.

Musicians making the list for the first time include Bruno, One Direction, Pharrell Williams and Avicii.  Musicians who fell off the list this year include Madonna, Carrie Underwood and Coldplay.

Here are Forbes' top 10 Most Powerful Celebrities. To see the full rankings, go to Forbes.com.

1. Beyoncé Knowles, $115 million
2. LeBron James, $72 million
3. Dr. Dre, $620 million
4. Oprah Winfrey, $82 million
5. Ellen DeGeneres, $70 million
6. Jay Z, $60 million
7. Floyd Mayweather, $105 million
8. Rihanna, $48 million
9. Katy Perry, $40 million
10. Robert Downey Jr., $75 million

Photo: First Lady Michelle Obama Graces The Cover Of ESSENCE Magazine August Edition

michelle obama essence august cover

First Lady Michelle Obama has always been vocal about her passion for higher learning, and this month she expounds on that in her candid conversation with ESSENCE Editor-in-Chief Vanessa K. Bush. A big part of the recipe for success has to do with nurturing reslience in our children, she says.
"I know I tell my kids all the time that they shouldn't shy away from difficult things, because that is the point at which you are really growing. It's not just about grades or test scores. Today our kids may shy away from applying to college if they think they don't have the right grade or test score. But the truth is that the kids who succeed and go on to be successful professionals are the ones who know how to work hard," says Mrs. Obama.
And in order to even get that far, she says, they have to see education as an opportunity and take advantage of that kind of foundation.
"We cannot waste the opportunity that we have here in America, especially as African-Americans. Our ancestors fought and bled and died so that we could go to school," she says. "And I still think about that."
It's a message she's drilled into her daughters. "We talk about responsibility and accountability, about making sure that they're not wasting the opportunities they're given. We make sure they know how lucky they are and that, because of that, they have an obligation to have their acts together and to take their education very seriously."

News: Nigerian Doctors To Begin Strike Tomorrow

Nigerian doctors will begin an indefinite strike tomorrow, after the Federal Government failed to heed a warning the doctors issued two weeks ago.
Speaking to the media in Abuja earlier today, the president of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr. Kayode Obembe, said the doctors had written an open letter to Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Anyim Pius Anyim, listing a set of grievances and demands.

“The post of Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC) has been circularised and operational,” the doctors’ letter stated. It added: “Rather than abolish it, the NMA hereby demands that four DCMACs for teaching hospitals and three for the federal medical centers be appointed to assist the Chairmen, Medical Advisory Committee, whose statutory responsibilities are too heavy for any single individual to handle. Directors in other government agencies are supported by several Deputy Directors, why not the CMAC who is also a Director? Such a DCMAC must have same qualifications as the CMAC.”

The NMA demanded that all health workers should be able to attain the height of their career (grade level 17) without the nomenclature of “Director” in the hospital setting, arguing that in this way, the Teaching Hospital Act will not be violated.

“The NMA demands that grade level 12 (CONMESS 2) in the health sector must be skipped for medical doctors. Consequently, no medical/dental practitioner should be on that grade level anymore,” the doctors insisted.

They called for the immediate appointment of a “surgeon-general of the federation” as promised by President Goodluck Jonathan.

In addition, the doctors are demanded a minimum hazard allowance of N100, 000 per month for medical doctors, adding that the specialist allowance should be adjusted as contained in the 2009 collective bargaining agreement.

The medical association is urging that all doctors on CONMESS 3 and above must be paid specialist allowance or its equivalent that is not less than 50% higher than what is paid to other health workers.

“The position of Chief Medical Director/Medical Director must continue to be occupied by a medical doctor, as contained in the Act establishing tertiary hospitals. The position remains sacrosanct and untouchable,” the NMA further demanded.

The medical body also urged the institution of a health trust fund to facilitate the upgrade of all hospitals in Nigeria.

News: France beats Nigeria 2-0 to reach #WorldCup2014 quarter finals

France make it through to the quarter-final stage with a 2-0 win over Nigeria.
It took 80 minutes for France to grab the opening goal through Paul Pogba before Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead late into injury time.
Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud had the first chance for France but his effort sailed hopelessly wide of the target.
Nigeria looked bright in the opening exchanges, with Stephen Keshi’s side looking very comfortable on the ball.
Fenerbahce striker Emmanuel Emenike thought he had put the Super Eagles in the lead when he tapped in Ahmed Musa’s dangerous cross.
Pogba then had the best chance of the half when he combined well with Mathieu Valbuena to volley towards goal.
Lille and Nigeria ‘keeper Vincent Enyeama was equal to Pogba’s effort to keep the scores level.
Tottenham shot stopper Hugo Lloris was called into action as half time loomed near when he parried a venomous strike from Emenike.
Both sides started after the interval in a cautious manner but Stoke City and Nigeria forward Peter Odemwingie forced a save from Lloris with a long distance strike just after the hour mark.
France then took control of the game and PSG middleman Yohan Cabaye struck the cross bar from the edge of the box on 76 minutes.
Nigeria ‘keeper Enyeama was in inspired form and he continued to keep his side in the game when he tipped Karim Benzema’s effort over the bar from a Valbuena free-kick.
However, after all the great saves from the Super Eagles goalkeeper, it was Enyeama’s mistake that led to the opening goal.
Juventus midfielder Pogba put Les Bleus in the lead when he headed into an open net following a blunder from Enyeama.
Substitute Antoine Griezmann gave Deschamps’ side an extra dimension in attack and after forcing a good save on 83 minutes, the Real Sociedad winger did manage to get on the score sheet in injury time when he beat the ‘keeper to the ball to poke into the net and end all hopes for Nigeria.
France will now face either Germany or Algeria in the quarter-finals which take place on Friday.

Video: TMZ Captures This: Chaos At BET Awards Pre Show Parties, Kills 1 Injures Many

The 14th annual BET Awards went down Sunday night as another memorable event – unfortunately for the wrong reasons.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, there were two incidents at unofficial BET Awards parties that left one person stabbed and one man dead from gunshot wounds. On Saturday evening, one man was stabbed outside of Lure Nightclub in Hollywood. The other incident took place at a restaurant where several shots were fired, leaving four people injured and one dead.
Police received reports of the stabbing at 8:45 p.m., and a man in his 30s was the victim. He was listed in stable condition at Cedars-Sinai. No suspect information was available as of Sunday morning, LAPD officer Drake Madison said.
A separate incident occurred on Sunday morning at 5:17 am at the Monalizza Restaurant and Banquet at 1161 N. Vermont Ave., where gunfire broke out at the location. “I’ve been told that it was a pre-party for BET,” officer Madison said of the event held at the Monalizza.
A representative from BET stated that the incidents that occurred took place at venues that have no ties to the network. With many celebs like Game, Meek Mill and Busta Rhymes present, the parties may have appeared to be BET-affiliated events by promoters.
“The two isolated incidents over the weekend occurred at locations with events that were unauthorized and unaffiliated with the BET Awards, BET Experience at L.A. LIVE or their partners,” the BET rep stated. “Security remains the number one priority for all official BET events and the network and all organizers will continue to maintain a safe environment for all planned activities.”
Sadly, the violence didn’t stop there. After the awards wrapped up, there was another shooting at the popular Supper Club in L.A.
According to TMZ, the shooting happened at 2:30 a.m. PT. No one was injured, but sources claim that the shooter was aiming for rapper Game’s car, while another says the shot was fired in the air. Police have obtained the video above of the shooter, but it doesn’t show his full body.

Video: Beyoncé Church, ‘National Church of Bey’ Responds to Criticism, Shoots Commercial

“We are very disappointed in the failure of the public to recognize the existence of a divine Deity walking among them,” the church’s founder Pauline John Andrews stated.” Deity’s often walk the Earth in their flesh form. Beyoncé will transcend back to the spirit once her work here on Mother Earth has been completed.”
“As our congregation continues to swell, we ask that you consider what is more real; an invisible spirit on high, or a walking, talking, breathing Goddess who shows you her true form daily? Beyoncé’s spirit is entrancing. We know that she was sent to this place to spread love, peace, and joy. While we do not believe Beyoncé to be the Creator, we recognize that she still sits among the throne of Gods. There is a lot of false information being spread about our beliefs, but we will correct all of the vicious lie-tellers. As Beyoncé spreads her gospel through song and dance, her message provides uplifting, loving, and many times real-life happenings. We humbly ask you to respect our beliefs, just as you want those to respect yours. Open your mind to new possibilities and you will see, just as we did, that Bey is a true higher power. Surfbort!”
Pauline Andrews also revealed that the church continues to grow at an unbelievable pace. “Since the day we decided to go public, we have had tons of requests to learn more about our religion. We have published the Beyble and it will soon be available for free to the public. Donations have poured in and we will soon have enough to build a temple in honor of Mother Bey. We will invite her to speak to her flock, once the doors are open.”
The Beyoncé Church (The National Church Of Bey), is also looking to expand outside of Atlanta. They revealed that they have parishes popping up all over the United States and the United Kingdom. The Church says they intend to spread their message abroad using their Tumblr account./ thenewsnerd.com.

News: Saudi man sees wife driving car on social media & divorces her

A Saudi man divorced his wife just after he saw her driving a car on social networks, but the woman denied the report, saying she was divorced because of persistent rifts.

The unnamed woman said she would file a lawsuit against her husband for his cruelty and beating her up during their marriage and that she would demand alimony.

“The report that he divorced me for driving a car is not true… if this is the reason, then I would not only drive a car but perform stunt driving,” she told Sabq daily.

“The real reason is that he was beating me up…this caused disputes between our families… he was lying when he said he saw me driving on social networks because the film was posted online just for our families to see,” she said.

News: Beyoncé, Jay Z divorce rumours grow stronger: Travel separately & stay in different hotel rooms

Ever since that lift incident with sister-in-law Solange Knowles, rumours have been rife that Jay Z's marriage with Beyoncé  is on the rocks.
But the super-famous couple have been doing everything in their power to reassure the world that they're stronger than ever.
As they embark on a joint US tour, they played personal footage from their 2008 wedding and from daughter Blue Ivy's birth.
And now, the usually private couple, have gone and snogged each other's faces off in front of shocked fans.
Queen Bey even posted a snap of the kiss on her Instagram account.
The picture shows rapper Jay Z dressed in white with a black beanie hat, kissing his wife, who's wearing a huge monchrome ball gown.
The couple's On The Road tour has taken the US by storm.
But things are not as hunky-dory as they look.
Beyonce and Jay Z have reportedly made separate travel and accommodation plans for their 'On the Run' tour.
The couple - whose marriage has been the subject of speculation it is in crisis - kicked off their joint 'On the Run' concert series this week but they are said to be only seeing one another on stage, as they travel separately and stay in different hotel rooms.
A source said: "They might be sharing a stage, but while on tour they'll live practically separate lives.
"Tensions between them are worse than ever, meaning they will be travelling between venues independently, staying in different hotel suites and even having separate entourages..
"They'll also have individual dressing rooms, so the only times they'll be together will be while they're performing."
The couple - who have two-year-old daughter Blue Ivy together - have both been the subject of rumours of infidelity and the insider admits they are struggling to trust one another.
The source told Grazia magazine: "They've both been dreading the tour. Cancelling wasn't an option, so on the surface it's going to be business as usual, but they're both struggling with trust issues after the spate of cheating allegations.
Jay's given Beyoncé  unlimited access to his texts and emails to try and keep the peace, but a lot of their communication will be through assistants."
Despite the claims, the pair have seemed comfortable on stage with one another and even treated fans to previously-unseen footage from their wedding.

News: Nobody wants to be Nigeria's Maradona- Mikel Obi #GoSuperEagles #WorldCup2014

Nigeria star John Obi Mikel has insisted that the team is all that matters for Stephen Keshi's men and that none of the players are looking for individual glory, saying that no-one wants to be the African side's Diego Maradona. Previous Super Eagles squad contained stars such as Jay-Jay Okocha, Rashidi Yekini and Daniel Amokachi, yet the current crop of players has impressed with their togetherness rather than with individual quality. Mikel and Ahmed Musa - who netted twice against Argentina - have been touted as Nigeria's biggest stars, yet the Chelsea midfielder has stressed that he's not thinking about individual success. "I only care about the team. Nobody wants to be the Maradona of this team," Mikel said at a press conference ahead of Nigeria's round of 16 game against France. "We don’t want to be talking about individuals. We all want to do our utmost for the team and I will keep giving my all."
Nigeria's preparation for Sunday's match against the French was marred by a row over appearance fees, with Keshi's men boycotting training the day before their trip to Brasilia, yet Mikel has insisted there were never any real issues.
"There were no major problems over money, just some little discussions. It’s what happens in football. I play for Chelsea and I know how these things work. They happen everywhere. "Things were quickly sorted and this will not affect our focus for the game. There were never any massive problems."

France have impressed so far this World Cup with some sublime performances in the group stages and Mikel expects a tight encounter at the Estadio Mane Garrincha. "It will be a spectacular game and we are very motivated. The match could be decided by details. It will be a close encounter. ; "I have played against some of the France players before in the Champions League. The coaches have also done their homework on how to approach the game and have given us all the details we need."
Meanwhile, head coach Stephen Keshi was full of respect for France as well ahead of their round of 16 encounter. "The France players all play at big clubs across the world and [Didier] Deschamps has plenty of options. They have started the tournament really well. It will be a very difficult game. ; "The players are all aware of what happened early on against Argentina in the gruop stages. We came out differently after the break. I hope we can take this experience with us toward the match against France. "It has been a very open tournament. You can never predict what will happen. Look at the Netherlands game [against Mexico] and what happened. Even Brazil are not guaranteed anything. It’s been a wonderful tournament."
Keshi has so far been reluctant to use star attacker Victor Moses, leading to suggestions that the duo have fallen out, but the Nigeria boss has stressed he doesn't have any problems with the Chelsea man, who was on loan at Liverpool last season. "There is no problem with Moses. We have a lot of good players and I can play anybody I want. "All the players who are here are good players."

News: Brazil's win generated more Twitter traffic than Super Bowl #WorldCup2014

Brazil's victory over Chile in an agonising penalty shootout that sent the hosts into the World Cup quarter-finals was more frantically tweeted than the Super Bowl, the social media company said on Saturday.
Traffic reached a record pace of 388,985 tweets per minute during the game, beating the 381,605 messages per minute fired during this year's NFL final, Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) said in a statement.
The peak came when Chile missed their last penalty, propelling Brazil into the quarter-finals.
A total of 16.4 million tweets were sent during the match, surpassing the 12.2 million sent for the opening game in which Brazil beat Croatia 3-1. In absolute numbers the Super Bowl was, however a bigger event, with more than 24.9 million tweets.
People like to use social media to comment on what they watch on TV, making global sports events like the World Cup enormous business opportunities for companies like Twitter.
Brazil is one of Twitter’s top global markets.

News: "Sexy" mugshot guy hires manager for gigs, manager now receives death threats

Now that Jeremy Meeks is one of the most famous good-looking criminals in history, there could be opportunity to earn some profit from his fame.
The man behind the #FineFelon trend on social media has reportedly hired a manager to help him land gigs in Hollywood. Jeremy has hired Gina Rodriguez, a prestigious Hollywood manager, to help him get get some production and modeling jobs, but her first task has been finding him a styling team for his upcoming court date!
The manager told Fox 411:
“We’ve been talking with attorneys and doing everything we can to get him the proper legal representation. I know that everyone is reporting on how he’s a criminal and he doesn’t deserve [fame] and he’s got this past gang affiliation, but that’s just it– that’s the key word, that’s his past. Unfortunately, it was all brought up again because of his mug shot being put out and then everyone started digging into his past. I think that everyone is focusing on his [alleged] gang affiliation, and he’s not [a gang member]. He’s a family man… In my opinion, I don’t know if [law enforcement] is upset with him, because he got so much attention [for his mug shot], but it wasn’t his fault. They posted his picture and the media ran with it because of the way he looks. I think that if he has a chance to have an amazing career, and change his life for his family, that’s the ultimate rags to riches story.”
Things aren’t as positive as they may seem in Jeremy’s world, however, since his new manager is now receiving death threats from “gangster-sounding people” after his newfound fame.
According to TMZ, Rodriguez has received nearly 30 calls, during which people harass her for representing Meeks, and inform her that she “deserves to die” for it.
The site reports:
We’re told his manager received around 30 harassing phone calls from “gangster-sounding people” … and one person repeatedly threatened to blow her head off — saying she deserved to die.
As we previously reported, cops say Jeremy was a member of the Northside Crips gang.
The manager filed a report with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept.
As far as Jeremy’s court style goes, Kevin Hart was recently asked by TMZ if the fine felon should rock a fancy suit.
The site reports:
Kevin Hart thinks criminal defendant/con Jeremy Meeks (aka Dreamy McMug) is crazy not to embrace the jumpsuit … but Kevin does think the color is all wrong.
Hart was coming out of Craig’s restaurant Friday night when we quizzed him on McMug, who asked the judge if he could come to court in a tailored suit — presumably as an audition for modeling agencies.

Photo: Massacre In Gboko: Soldiers At Dangote’s Cement Factory Kill 7

UPDATE:

Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote opens talks with Gboko community where soldiers killed 7 near his cement factory.

Nigerian billionaire and Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, opened direct negotiations, Monday, with the Gboko community of Benue State where soldiers at his multibillion dollar cement factory killed seven locals.
The meeting came barely 24 hours after PREMIUM TIMES exposed the massacre.
Mr. Dangote arrived in Gboko early Monday where he met with state officials, including Governor Gabriel Suswam, and the leaders of Gboko and Mbayion community where the killings took place March 18, before naming a high-powered committee to negotiate and reconcile with the community.
The committee, headed by Joseph Makoju, the immediate past Chief Operating Officer of the Dangote group, and former Managing Director, Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, held its first meeting in Gboko Tuesday.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State Governor, Cletus Akwaya, confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that the meeting took place.
Mr. Akwaya said the Benue State government had no hand in the killings, but noted that Mr. Dangote was ready to settle with the aggrieved community.

For 19-year-old Terhile Jirbo, it was another answer to the call of nature. But when gunfire rang out that afternoon of March 18, what seemed a harmless routine would leave a fatal scar on him and his community in Gboko, a major town in the North-central state of Benue.
Members of Mbayion community in Gboko had responded after a soldier shot Mr. Jirbo for emptying his bowel near the Gboko Cement factory, the second most lucrative cement factory belonging to Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote. The attacker was one of two-dozen troops securing the multibillion-dollar factory.
In protest of the shooting, the community members marched outside the factory, and for hours, they asked for justice.
But as they hurled insults at the soldiers, asking them to leave the community, the troops responded with gunfire, according to state officials, witnesses, and community leaders.
Shot on the leg, one woman laid bloodied on the ground, and tried to crawl to safety. Then, a soldier closed up on her, pointed his rifle directly at her head and blasted, a witness said.
The woman’s brain matter splattered on another bullet-ridden victim, a man feigning death next to her. That man survived the attack even after a bullet ripped open his abdomen, spilling out his intestines.
When the shooting and the confusion subsided over three hours later, the death toll stood at seven – one woman, six men.
The victims – aged 36 and below – were all shot dead by troops of the Nigerian army, survivors and community members said.
By chance or fate, Mr. Jirbo, the teenager whose shooting by a soldier ignited the fracas, survived the attack. But he would be deformed for life, his mouth disfigured and emptied of almost all teeth in the upper region. A member of the more than two-dozen military team guarding the multibillion-dollar Gboko cement factory shot him in the mouth.
His offense: relieving himself near the Dangote factory complex, and refusing to pack the waste with his mouth when ordered to do so by the soldier.
In the outburst of violence that followed, the soldiers shot dead Doose Ornguze, 19, female; Luper Nongo Igber, 20, male; Timothy Terngu Mase, 21, male; Myom Mbaume, 25, male; Aondoyima Tyokase, 26, male; Iornenge Anum, 35, male and Aondoakura Tseeneke, 36, male.
