Shakira will sing her World Cup tune “La la la (Brazil 2014)” in a duet with Brazilian star Carlinhos Brown at Rio’s Maracana soccer stadium before the World Cup final match
It will mark Shakira’s third consecutive appearance at a World Cup. Her native Columbia plays World Cup hosts Brazil in a quarterfinal matchup on Friday. "I have an intricate relationship with football for obvious reasons,” Shakira said, a reference to her relationship with Spanish defender Gerard Pique, with whom she had a son last year. “I truly understand what the World Cup means to so many people, myself included."
"I just feel so grateful for the opportunity to come back to perform at the closing ceremony of this year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil. It feels right," she added. "The fans have shown the most incredible support for this song, and I can't wait to perform it for them." Shakira’s “La la la” has proved more popular with fans than “We Are One,” the World Cup anthem performed by Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez together with Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte at the opening ceremony on June 12. Shakira’s track “Waka Waka,” the official anthem of the 2010 World Cup, was one of the most popular and successful World Cup songs of all time. Santana, Wyclef and Pires will perform the tournament's official anthem, "Dar Um Jeito" at the closing ceremony while Pires and Sangalo will also perform a medley of local Brazilian music.
