A five-week-old baby and a seven-year-old girl were killed when the cars they were travelling in collided at an intersection in Al Ain city, UAE.
The infant girl, identified as Laila, was in a car with her mother, father, two sisters and maid, heading to a party organised by Laila’s grandfather to celebrate her birth when the accident happened on Saturday evening.Police said Laila was on her mother’s lap in the front passenger seat when their car was struck by another vehicle that had jumped a red light in the Al Markania area. Laila died at the scene. Her mother and one of her sisters sustained serious injuries and are still being treated at Tawam Hospital.
Police say the family car, driven by Laila’s father, was turning at an intersection when the other car heading in the opposite direction jumped a red light and smashed into them. The two cars collided, killing Laila and a seven-year-old girl who was travelling in the car that had jumped the red light.
Officers detained the Asian driver for questioning. Police did not confirm whether the seven-year-old girl was wearing a seatbelt when the crash happened. The seven-year-old’s mother was also seriously injured in the crash and is in Tawam Hospital. Both drivers escaped with minor injuries. It is not clear whether the Asian driver was related to his passengers.
