A businessman who vanished last year was drugged, put into a sack and shipped off to Iran, a court was told.
Details of how British citizen Abbas Yazdi went missing emerged as the trial of a gang accused of his kidnap began in Dubai.Only one of the seven men accused of the dad’s disappearance appeared at Dubai Court of First Instance on Wednesday. Three others are in custody and three more are still on the run.
The man confessed to kidnapping but denied assault, robbery and causing danger to Yazdi’s life.
Prosecutors said six men kidnapped the businessman, who is of Iranian origin, just one day before he was due to testify via video to a court in The Hague about a case launched against an Iranian national oil company.
A 33-year-old Emirati police officer said that the force learned some Iranian men had kidnapped Yazdi and then drugged him and drove him in a rental car to Sharjah.
The officer said Yazdi was smuggled out of the country on a dhow. But police arrested three men in Dubai while they were celebrating the success of their kidnapping.
The judge adjourned the case until June 15. Yazdi’s wife has been told by the UK Foreign Office it is believed he died during the abduction – but this has not been confirmed.
