Policemen attached to Enugu State Police command are said to be on the look-out for three security operatives attached to Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Nkpor, Idemmili North local government area, Anambra state, Nigeria after they allegedly gang-raped a 14-year-old girl on the church premises.
Police crime statistics in the State command shows that gang-raping is topping the list of heinous crimes.
It was gathered that since December, 2013 till date, the command has recorded 86 reported cases of rape. Police also said, it was finding it difficult to persecute suspects of this crime as parents or guardians of the victims would not want public exposure of their wards for obvious reason.
The girl, identified as Ujunwa Nwolisa, had gone to fetch firewood in the company of two other under aged boys when she was accosted by the three men and raped at machete point.
Narrating her ordeal to the Church Reverend father and Policemen, the girl said they were gathering firewood and picking cashew fruits that fell on the ground inside the church compound when three security operatives of the church emerged from nowhere and accused them of plucking the fruits.
She said the incident happened at about 4.00pm. “I screamed to the best of my ability after my friends ran away to go and seek help, but before help could come, two of them have already penetrated me and it was painful with blood oozing out of my private part,” the victim stated.
One of the suspects has been arrested already while efforts are being made to arrest the other two who are now at large.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra police spokesman, PPRO Emeka Chukwuemeka , a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) in a telephone interview said investigation is ongoing and once concluded, the suspects would be arraigned soon.
