Photos: Nigeria's Super Falcons Crowned 2014 African Women's Champions: Beat Cameroon 2-0

The Super Falcons of Nigeria today, Saturday defeated Cameroon 2-0 to win the ninth edition of the African Women Championship (AWC) in Windhoek, Namibia.

NAN reports that goals from Desire Oparanozie and Asisat Oshoala were all Nigeria needed to reclaim the AWC title.

After a dominant opening period, Oparanozie put the Super Falcons in front in the 12th minute with a superb free-kick.

Oshoala then doubled Nigeria’s lead two minutes from the end of an enthralling first half.

NAN recalls that only twice since the inaugural AWC in 1998 had Nigeria failed to win the trophy.

Equatorial Guinea are the only other winners, in 2008 and 2012, and they failed to qualify for this year’s tournament.

Nigeria and Cameroon had already qualified for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Canada by reaching the final.

They will be joined there by Cote D’Ivoire who had earlier in the day beaten South Africa 1-0 in the third-place match.

In an even contest, also played in Windhoek, Rebecca Ida scored the winning goal six minutes from full time.

She pounced on a loose ball in the Banyana Banyana penalty area from a corner kick, and slotted the ball home.

The championship which kicked off on Oct. 11 came to an end on Saturday.
