Feet dangling off the ground, this is the terrifying moment fountains of molten lava spurt forth towards photographer Lurie Belegurschi’s legs.
These spectacular close-ups of Iceland’s Bardarbunga volcano show lava spewing more than 200 metres into the air and were taken by Mr Belegurschi from a helicopter as it hovered above.
Molten rock has been streaming out from a one-mile long fissure north of the rumbling volcano since an eruption on Friday 29 August was followed by a larger eruption on Sunday 31 August.
The eruptions occurred after thousands of small earthquakes underneath Bardarbunga caused fresh magma to burrow underground.
The magnificence and scale of the eruption has had photographers, geologists and volcano enthusiasts thronging to the area to witness the awe-inspiring sight themselves.
