News: That OAU student tests negative for Ebola

The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, has confirmed that the female student of the institution who was suspected to have contacted the Ebola Virus Disease and moved to Lagos State has tested negative to the virus.
This was disclosed via a telephone interview between the Public Relations Officer of the OAU, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, and a Punch reporter on Thursday.
” The preliminary result of the girl is out and she tested negative. Another test will be done tomorrow. The university will issue a statement on this later today,” he said.

Confusion ensued at the campus of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife on Tuesday, when a female student of the institution was reported to have contracted the dreaded Ebola Virus.
Preliminary investigation conducted by the management and the institution’s teaching hospital in Ile-Ife revealed that the suspected student had primary contact with an EVD victim in Port Hacourt, Rivers State before returning to the campus early this week.
It was reported that the student had suddenly taken ill and was rushed to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTHC) for treatment.
Sources in the institution also said the student confessed to have had primary contact with an EVD victim in Port Harcourt before arriving at the university.
It was learnt that the management of the university had made arrangement and has moved the suspect to Lagos where the state of her health would be determined.
When the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the University, Abiodun Olarewaju was contacted, he confirmed the development but asserted that student had been evacuated to Lagos for thorough screening to ascertain if she had actually contacted the dreaded disease or not.
Hear him, “a female student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, who is suspected to be a secondary contact of the Ebola Virus Disease in Port-Harcourt, presented sick at the University Health Centre.

According to recent reports, the Federal Government has reopened First Consultant Hospital in Obalende, Lagos where Liberian Patrick Sawyer, the man who imported Ebola Virus to Nigeria, died.
In a letter sent to the Lagos state Ministry of Health, the Federal Government stated that after putting the hospital through three rounds of state-certified sanitization processes in line with the world standard, the hospital is now free to continue its professional health care services to patients.
Recall that the hospital was shut down over a month ago after Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian man died there of the deadly disease. Dr Adadevoh and nurse Ejelonu also got infected in the said hospital and also later died.
