Morgan landed safely in Toronto on Friday night after the jet he was piloting from Mississippi was hit with numerous technical issues.
The 77 year old, whose film Ruth & Alex premiered at the festival that night, blames the malfunction on the aircraft's wings. “The slats would not retract in the air,” he explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “On the ground they were fine, but in the air they were a problem. We were about 10 minutes in the air trying to get them to retract but they didn’t so we went back and landed.”
After some quick troubleshooting, Morgan took off again, only to be hit with the same issue. “Once we got in the air, they still didn’t work again, so we landed,” he explained. "We cycled them again, and took off, they still didn’t work, so we landed. Cycled them again, and took off, they still didn’t work so we went back. Had to put the plane away and take out the other plane.”
In the end, Morgan reached his destination safely, arriving fashionably late (90 minutes) for Ruth & Alex's pre-reception party.
The actor, who obtained his pilot license at age 65, has since downplayed the incident. “I just didn’t know how late I was. I was never in any danger.”
