The Olympics, however, only make up a small part of Zamperini's inspiring life story. After competing in the 1936 Berlin games as a long distance runner (where he was congratulated by Hitler for his fast finish), Zamperini joined the U.S. Air Force. In 1942, his plane was shot down over the Pacific, 850 miles west of Oahu. Zamperini and the other two survivors of the crash subsisted on a diet of rainwater and fish. After 33 days adrift in the shark-infested waters, one of the other survivors died. After 47 days adrift, Zamperini and the other survivor finally reached land, but were immediately captured by Japanese soldiers. The two were taken to a POW camp and were brutally tortured for the next three years.
When the war ended, Zamperini became a born again Christian and embarked on a third career as an inspirational speaker. During the 1950s, he made several visits to Japan, where he forgave his prison guard tormentors.
The trailer for Jolie's film includes fascinating interview footage with the real-life Zamperini, who turned 97 last month.

Who else is looking forward to this? .....because I am!
