News & Video: 8 Times Grammy Awards Winner, Lauryn Hill Reveals Why She Left Show Business

Soul singer and rapper Lauryn Hill’s career has been pretty eventful to say the least.
First, she put out a classic album with her ex-band mates the Fugees in 1996, called “The Score.” Then she embarked on a solo career and put out another classic album with the “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” which won her five Grammy awards.
But soon after, things began to fall apart for the New Jersey native, as her long time mentor and collaborator Wyclef Jean revealed the two had a steamy affair during the group’s heyday, and soon after that, Hill taped an episode of “MTV Unplugged,” which was highly criticized for her overall performance and the emotional breakdown she suffered while playing.

And if that wasn’t enough, she was sent to prison for tax evasion years later.
So there’s no doubt that Hill’s fans have been thrilled as of late, since it seems the 38-year old has turned all of that around and has started to sound and look like her old self again. Earlier this week, Hill took her talents to the “Late Show With David Letterman,” where she did a tribute performance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles appearing on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” and she was wonderful.
Decked out in a stylish plaid ensemble and sporting a funky hat, Hill sounded at the top of her game, which could mean that 2014 could be the year that she has a rebirth of sorts, and hopefully she’ll get back to making the music that made her famous years ago.

So why did the “Zion” singer leave showbiz in the first place? She said it was because she lacked the proper support system around her, and there were some internal things that she needed to fix first.
“There were a number of different reasons [for leaving show business],” she said. “But partly, the support system that I needed was not necessarily in place. There were things about myself, personal-growth things, that I had to go through in order to feel like it was worth it.”
