The statistics are beyond alarming: each day in sub-Saharan Africa, hundreds of children are infected with HIV, primarily through their mothers. And as Vogue reports in its May issue, the fashion industry is looking to lend a hand.
Several top fashion icons have teamed up with Born Free, a New York-based charity geared at drastically reducing mother-to-child HIV transmission. The end result: The Born Free Collection.
22 models and designers -- including Vogue editor Anna Wintour -- have created limited edition wearable pieces, each based on exclusive prints by African artist Wangechi Mutu. Other high-profile names assisting the campaign include Stella McCartney, Donna Karan, Tory Burch, and Gisele Bundchen.
All items are priced at $250 or less, and can be found exlusively at Amazon's Shopbop. Money raised from sales of the clothing will go toward providing lifesaving drugs to those in need. According to Born Free, one pill a day can allow a mother with HIV or AIDS can to almost completely eradicate the risk of transmitting the disease to her child.
Digital downloads for the May issue of Vogue are available now, with the print edition hitting newsstands on April 29.
