Controversial Photos: Indian photographer sparks outrage with rape themed fashion shoot

An Indian fashion shoot showing a woman being groped on a bus has triggered nationwide outrage as it reignited memories of the gruesome New Delhi gang rape of a physiotherapy student in 2012.
Parents of the trainee physiotherapist girl who was brutally raped and physically tortured in a moving bus by six men, demanded stringent action against the Mumbai-based photographer for mocking the plight of a rape victim.
The photo shoot done with fashion models depicts a girl being groped by a group of male models inside a bus – reminiscent of the Delhi incident that had sparked nationwide protests and led to the formulation of stringent anti-rape laws by the country’s parliament.
Mother of the girl who was popularly called Nirbhaya (fearless) by the Indian media, slammed photographer Raj for hurting her sentiments through his fashion shoot while Nirbhaya’s father said he would appeal to the courts to take stringent action against Shetye.
However, an underfire Shetye has refused to speak on camera about the incident and maintained that the shoot was just a depiction of the situation of women in the country and not based on this specific rape incident.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the number of rapes in India rose by 35.2 percent to 33,707 in 2013 compared to the previous year – with Delhi reporting 1,441 rapes.
The disturbing fashion shoot enraged Twitter.
