The state is being torn apart by the ethno-religious violence, involving the mostly-Christian-ethnic Jukun against their Muslim Hausa and Fulani neighbours. All of them are rivals in the race for political control of the state.
According to AFP who spoke with a local police source, the gunmen, dressed-up in military uniform, stormed the village, set buildings ablaze and started shooting the residents on sight.
“Some unknown gunmen attacked Kauyen-Yaku village and killed 17 people while four others were injured. Several homes were burnt in the attack by the gunmen, who came from neighbouring Nasarawa state,” the source confirmed. However, the villagers think that the gunmen were ethnic Fulani herdsmen.
The residents of another mainly Christian village in the state mentioned that the death toll from the raid on Tuesday April 22, 2014 has increased to 35, while at least 15 villagers remain missing.
The curfew is still in force in the state, but it's futile! Tensions are high and the whole area is boiling. At the same time, the Acting Governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Garba Umar is going to send a delegation to the government of Benue State to negotiate the steps required to stop the endless battle between Fulani and the members in the area.
