Missy Elliott becomes the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame
Missy Elliot will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame during its June 13 awards ceremony in New York City, the organization said—making her the first female hip-hop artist to achieve this honor, according to CBS News.
Other songwriters who will be inducted include Cat Stevens (also known as Yusuf), Dallas Austin, Jack Tempchin, John Prine and Tom T. Hall. Some of Elliott’s many writing credits include hits such as “Get Ur Freak On” and “Work It.” Stevens penned “Moonshadow” and “Wild World.” Austin is behind TLC’s “Creep.” In making its announcement, the Songwriters Hall of Fame described Elliott as “one of the most significant female artists in contemporary music history,” calling the five-time Grammy winner a “groundbreaking solo superstar, pioneering songwriter-producer, and across-the-board cultural icon.”
