R. Kelly's youngest child has come out as transgender on social media, announcing he's transitioning from female to male and now calls himself Jay (born a girl, Jay's original name was Jaya).
Now 14, Jay wrote about his journey on Instagram, revealing he's identified as a male since he was as young as age six.
According to Jay, his mother, Drea (who appears on the reality show Hollywood Exes), has stood behind his decision 100 per cent.
"[My mom] was like, ‘Baby, you know I love you if you were bi, gay, [lesbian], you name it and I would still love you so much,’” Jay wrote on his Ask.fm page, a social media site that allows users to answer questions submitted by others. "She was very proud of me, I was like, 'Thank you mum for accepting the fact that I’m a transgender. And same with my sister, she told me that she was proud of me, and respects me by calling me handsome and calling me her little brother now, and I love her for that, so you know it was great for me."
Now that his gender identity is out in the open, Jay admitted: “I believe I am a boy and want surgery, and the medication to help me be who I was supposed to be."
R. Kelly and Drea separated in 2005, with their divorce finalized in 2009. As recently as three months ago, Jay wrote on social media that his father was unaware of his new identity; the "Trapped in the Closet" singer has yet to comment on Jay's coming out.
