Two African men who visited Dubai to hunt for a naïve victim who could buy “gold sand” for $6 million were themselves hunted by the police.
Apparently realising that money cloning scams could no longer work in the emirate of two million people, the two men, aged 42 and 53 years, decided to come up with an innovative game to trick people dreaming of quick wealth.
“They claimed they have sand which contains gold worth nearly $6 million,” said Major-General Khalil Al Mansouri, Dubai’s Assistant Police Commander for Criminal Affairs.
“It was just sand but they claimed it contained gold…they were looking for a victim who will believe them and buy the sand.”
Mansouri said police sent an undercover to the two, who were staying at a local hotel, and asked him to bargain them for a deal.
“Our man posed as a customer who wants to buy the gold sand…when he produced money and they produced the sand, our men arrested them.”
