British actor Idris Elba to star as Okonkwo in ‘Things Fall Apart’ series adaptation

English actor, Idris Elba, is set to portray Okonkwo, the protagonist in Chinua Achebe’s classic novel, Things Fall Apart, in a new TV series adaptation by American entertainment company, A24.
Elba, who will also produce the series, is best known for his roles in Thor, The Suicide Squad, Pacific Rim, and Beasts of No Nation. The revered actor has earned acclaim for his work in popular TV series like The Wire and Luther.
He also portrayed Nelson Mandela in the 2013 biographical film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

According to Variety, the official description of “Things Fall Apart” states it is the “story of Okonkwo (Elba), one of literature’s most iconic characters—a fearless African warrior and leader who is resolute about preserving his people and culture.
As British colonisers disrupt his world, Okonkwo’s struggle to maintain power and tradition spirals into a heart-wrenching confrontation. His fierce resolve, a fatal flaw in the face of unstoppable change, makes him an unforgettable character, embodying the tension between strength, vulnerability and adaptability.”

Elba will serve as executive producer alongside Gina Carter under their 22Summers production banner. David Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka will also executive produce through Yoruba Saxon, while Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi, and Achebe Masterworks will join as additional executive producers.
Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi and Achebe Masterworks also serve as executive producers. A24 is the studio.

Things Fall Apart was first adapted as a movie in 1971 and later as a mini-series in 1987, with renowned Nigerian actor Pete Edochie playing Okonkwo, the revered wrestling champion of Umuofia.

What do you know? You are not Igbo Amaka clearly. Will Idris Elba speak Igbo well and have all the necessary Igbo gestures?

Many others could have fit that role better, in my humble opinion, including Ramsey Noah and Jim Iyke. There are a host of others who could play the role perfectly.
Eg, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, or even Yul Edochie.
