News: Richard Branson makes a vow after tragic Virgin Galactic crash

An explosion ripped through his company’s space tourism rocket, killing one pilot and injuring another.
He’s saddened, but undeterred.
Richard Branson, the British billionaire behind the Virgin Group and Virgin Galactic’s commercial space travel venture, issued a statement that expressed his sorrow after the Friday explosion of a Virgin Galactic rocket — and he vowed to move forward.

Branson wrote:

I am writing this as we refuel on one of the most difficult trips I have ever had to make. I will be in Mojave soon to join the Virgin Galactic and Scaled Composite teams involved in the SpaceShipTwo flight test program. Mojave is also where I want to be – with the dedicated and hard-working people who are now in shock at this devastating loss.

Everyone at Virgin Galactic, The Spaceship Company and Scaled Composites is deeply saddened by today’s events. All our thoughts are with the families of everyone affected by this tragic event, and we are doing everything we can to support them.

This was the latest part of an extensive test flight program, and the 55th time SpaceShipTwo had flown. It was WhiteKnightTwo’s 173rd flight and the 35th time SpaceShipTwo had flown freely. The testing program has also included extensive ground testing of all parts of the spaceship. We’ve always known that the road to space is extremely difficult – and that every new transportation system has to deal with bad days early in their history.

Virgin Galactic CEO George Whitesides summed up this spirit in the company by saying: “We owe it to the folks who were flying these vehicles, as well as those who’ve been working so hard on them, to understand this and to move forward. And that is what we’ll do.”

Space is hard – but worth it. We will persevere and move forward together.

The pilot who survived the accident - but remains in hospital was seriously injured - is 43-year-old Peter Siebold.

Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson said he is 'determined to find out what went wrong' when SpaceShipTwo crashed.

The rocket came down in the Mojave Desert in California, having 'suffered a serious anomaly' during the flight conducted by Scaled Composites.

The spaceship blew up at 45,000ft, killing Mr Alsbury and setting back Branson's ambitious plans for commercial space travel.  He arrived at the crash site in the Mojave desert today, to survey the damage himself.
