A Giant Pacific octopus has become the latest resident at Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.
Native to the North Pacific Ocean, the animal is the largest of the octopus species. It can grow to 4.3 metres in length and weigh more than 70 kilograms.
The creature has almost no bone structure, which allows it to slip into tight crevices to ambush prey or hide from predators.
All of its vital organs, including three hearts, are contained in its head, while the rest of the body is made up of the eight arms.
"They have excellent eyesight and can taste with their tentacles," said a spokesman for Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo.
"Being one of the most intelligent invertebrates, they can work out puzzles and will remember a route through a maze after only a couple of attempts.
"They are also masters in disguise, being able to change colour and texture of their skin using specialised skin cells."
The underwater zoo is in Dubai Mall on level two above the main aquarium and is home to a wide range of animals.
They include Humboldt penguins, caimans, piranhas, giant spider crabs, small-clawed otters, sea jellies and clownfish.
The attraction is open daily from 10am to 1am during Ramadan.
