In a surprise announcement, Tim Cook, Apple’s longtime CEO, will be stepping down from the role on Sept. 1.
“It has been the greatest privilege of my life,” Cook said in a statement.
An impressive tenure: Over 15 years as CEO, Cook oversaw the launch of flagship products, including the Apple Watch and AirPods, and grew the company’s market capitalization to $4 trillion.
He will be succeeded by John Ternus, the senior vice president of hardware engineering, but plans to stay on as chairman.
Apple’s next CEO: Ternus joined Apple in 2001.
A mechanical engineer, he has run the hardware division behind the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Vision Pro and more since 2021.
Experts said he had been primed for the CEO role.
