Heathrow Airport closed after nearby fire causes power outage

Flights to and from London’s Heathrow Airport were canceled Friday after a fire at a nearby substation knocked out power to Europe’s busiest airport, disrupting travel plans around the world.

Footage posted to social media showed huge flames coming from the facility. 

“Significant disruption” is expected at London’s Heathrow for a prolonged period, officials said, after the airport announced a complete shutdown. 

Heathrow’s closure is expected to affect more than 1,300 flights, potentially causing disruption for tens of thousands of travelers. 

An airline analytics firm estimated that “upwards of 145,000” passengers could be impacted.
