FULL NOM. LIST: Lionel Messi fails to make the Ballon d'Or shortlist for the first time since 2005

The French news magazine France Football released its annual Ballon d'Or nominees on Friday.
Players Selma Bacha, Alex Morgan, Alexia Putellas, Catarina Macario, Rafael Leão and Mohamed Salah were among the shortlist's nominees, along with several of their peers.

Hot favourite Karim Benzema has been nominated for the 2022 Ballon d'Or, but there is no place on the shortlist for Paris Saint-Germain duo Lionel Messi and Neymar. Messi has won the award seven times - more than any other player in history - but does not make the list for the first time since 2005.

Winners of the Ballon d'Or awards are announced at a glitzy ceremony in Paris on October 17.
