After being confiscated they were put in an incinerator by the US Department of Agriculture, the department disclosed that the snails can grow up to 8in long, they were nursing fears that they were carrying parasites.Maveeda Mirza, the programme manager for Customs and Border Protection, explained the snails can carry bacteria leading to life-threatening disease in humans, as well as posing a threat to the local environment.
The programme manager went further to state:‘These snails are seriously harmful to local plants because they will eat any kind of crop they can get to,’ she told the BBC.‘We’re investigating what happened, but it doesn’t seem like there was smuggling involved.’Ms Mirza added that there have been cases of the snails being accidentally transported in luggage, but never have they been confiscated in such a large quantity. An investigation is currently underway into why one person would want so many of them.
