News: The world celebrates Nelson Mandela who would have been 96 years old today

It's been six months since Nelson Mandela, the man who spent his life fighting apartheid in South Africa and endured to become the nation's first Black President, died at the age of 95. Now, on what would have been his 96th birthday, Google is paying tribute to the inspirational leader with an animated Google Doodle
Google's doodle traces six of Mandela's most powerful quotes from throughout his life with animated words and images to illustrate the time and place.
Mandela spent 27 years in prison for allegedly conspiring to overthrow South Africa's government, which at the time operated under South Africa's racial segregation system known as apartheid. He was finally released from prison by then-South Africa President Frederik Willem de Klerk who began the process of dismantling apartheid. In 1994, Mandela was elected president of South Africa.
Mandela retired from politics in 1999, but remained on the world stage for years after and served as an inspiration to people not just in South Africa, but around the world. He died on December 5, 2013.

1. He wasn't born Nelson Mandela but rather Rolihlahla Mandela in Mvezo, a village on the eastern cape of South Africa, in 1918.
2. As a young boy, he lived in Qunu, a village so small that there were no roads. There were only footpaths, and families lived in huts.
3. He was baptized in the United Methodist Church and given the name Nelson by a teacher.
4. His father, a counselor to the tribal chief, died when he was 9. Mandela was then adopted by the tribal chief.
5. He fled to Johannesburg to avoid a marriage arranged by the tribal regent.
6. Sports were a part of his life even during his time as a political prisoner at Robben Island. There, he helped to form a very limited sports program in the isolation section. He and other prisoners became fans of the prison soccer teams that would play weekly matches in the general section of the prison.
8. Mandela was known to excel in boxing.
9. In 2005, Mandela announced his son, Makgatho Mandela, had died of AIDS.
