News: Michael Schumacher returns home to continue rehabilitation after skiing accident
Michael Schumacher is to continue his road to recovery from severe head injuries following a skiing accident in December from his home in Switzerland.
In June this year Schumacher was moved from a hospital in Grenoble, where he had been cared for since the end of December following the accident, to the University Hospital in Lausanne.
After eight weeks at the Lausanne facility, it has now been decided Schumacher will make the short 25-mile journey back to his house at Gland on the shores of Lake Geneva to continue his rehabilitation.
A statement from Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm, read: 'Michael's rehabilitation will continue from now on from home.
'Considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months.
'There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead.
'We would like to extend our gratitude to the entire team at CHUV Lausanne for their thorough and competent work.
'We ask the privacy of Michael's family continue to be respected, and that speculation about his state of health is avoided.'
Formula One legend Michael Schumacher is now communicating with his family by fluttering his eye-lashes, it was reported today.
The former racing driver is making such good progress he might be allowed home by the end of next month.
According to reports in Croatian media, doctors Darko Chudy and Vedran Deletis, who have developed a revolutionary microchip implanting technique, may plan to use it to help him.
It is believed the microchip may be able to help him to walk and talk again after his extended period in a coma.
British racing drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button have written poignant letters of support to critically injured legend Michael Schumacher.
The handwritten notes were revealed as Schumacher was reported to have shown further signs of improvement by fluttering his eyes to communicate.
Hamilton wrote:
“Dear Michael. You are always in my prayers. Prayers of hope that you pull through this difficult time.”
He went on: “You have already achieved so much, given so much."
And he ended by saying: “May God watch over you and show you the way back to your family, fans and friends.”
Button’s letter said:
“When I think of Michael Schumacher I think of two things.
"The first is of one my earliest memories of being in Formula One driving out of the pitlane in Melbourne and seeing Michael’s red Ferrari ahead of me scattering the leaves as he drove beneath the trees at the approach to turn three. Even in 2000 he was already a legend.
"The second thing I think about it is that familiar red car snaking about in my mirrors. Michael was such a formidable racer relentlessly competitive - Always There.
“He’s fighting his greatest battle right now and I know everyone at Formula One will hope that he will win again. I certainly hope he will.”
