Three Emiratis, aged between 19 and 22, allegedly premeditatedly murdered a compatriot, waiting for him outside a hotel and then beating him up and stabbing him several times, a court heard.
The incident happened after 3am on February 23 in the car park outside a hotel in Al Qusais. The murder, according to eyewitnesses, resulted from a brawl at the Russian bar in the hotel.
The trio — a student and two unemployed young men — were charged with premeditated murder in the Court of First Instance.
An Indian technician said he saw one of the suspects looking angry and shouting because someone had dropped his iggal (traditional head wear) in the bar and that was considered an insult.
A police major said when they reached the crime scene, they found the victim lying in a pool of blood. He was severely injured and died before he could be taken to hospital.
The posse checked the hotel’s CCTV camera footage and saw one of the three defendants stabbing one of the staff in the thigh.
The victim was seen leaving the hotel with a compatriot through the basement exit.
Police tracked down the trio with the help of the Anti-Narcotics Division as all three had criminal records in drugs and assault cases.
Two of them were arrested in a villa under construction in Al Warqa 3.
“We caught them before they could climb the fence and run away. They looked as if they were under the influence of narcotics,” the major added.
The third was arrested from his mother’s closet in the family house in Nad-Al-Hamar where he had hidden. All three are denying any involvement in the fatal stabbing incident.
The major said they tracked the local man who was spotted leaving the hotel with the victim.
“The local, a deputy manager, said he saw one of the defendants fighting with the staff at the bar and screaming he would kill somebody.”
Security guards walked the defendants out while the witness headed to his car.
“I then came across the victim, who was my friend, and offered to drive him home as he did not have his own car,” the deputy manager said. As they walked out of the exit, the deputy manager saw five men, including the three on trial, approaching them and yelling at the victim.
The deputy manager said he ran away after seeing they carried knives. He heard his friend screaming as he jumped into a cab, leaving his car behind.
He learnt later that his friend had been killed.
The case has been adjourned to August 24.
