Video: Amazing: US doctors successfully implant lab-grown vaginas on to 4 women

Doctors have implanted lab-grown vaginas into four women, all of whom have said their new genitalia works just as well as if they had been born with it.
The procedure was conducted eight years ago on women who were teenagers at the time, but the results have not been reported until now.
According to the BBC, each of the participants’ vaginas did not form properly before birth, a condition known as vaginal aplasia that can lead to defects in other reproductive organs.
Doctors at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina scanned the participants’ pelvic areas to craft 3D, biodegradable vaginal frames.
A tissue biopsy was then taken from each participant’s vulva to create a pool of cells.
The team attached smooth muscle cells to the outside of the tube-like frames and vaginal lining to the inside.
The vaginas were placed in an incubator until they were ready to be implanted.
All of the women have reported to be able to have sex, orgasm and become aroused with no pain or excessive difficulty.
They can even have normal pregnancies if they desire.
Dr Anthony Atala, director of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest told the BBC:

“Really for the first time we’ve created a whole organ that was never there to start with, it was a challenge.”

Vaginas can now join bladders, blood vessels and tracheas as lab-grown body parts conceived by an artificial model and living tissue.
The next step will be to create vital organs with the same process, one that has been made much more efficient thanks to 3D printing.
