A tragedy, which claimed lives of 5 children, occurred yesterday Tuesday April 08 in Hanya Danbushiya, Kaduna North LGA, when the canoe capsized in River Kaduna.
The victims, all canoe peddlers, were reportedly returning to the river bank to pick other passengers, when on their way the canoe unexpectedly hit an object in the river and turned over.
As soon as the residents became aware of the accident, they formed a search party to look for the children’s bodies.
Search party head Aminu Ibrahim provided the names of the victims: Aliyu Mohammed, 13; Shehu Ismaila 13; Ibrahim Ladan 14; and his brother, Musa Ladan, 15, and Mustapha Hamad, 15.
He described the boys as “good canoe paddlers and are trusted by those who use canoe as a means of transport”.
He lamented that the state Fire Service didn’t respond to the villager’s distress call when contacted.
