UAE Introduces Compulsory Military Service for Men

There’s big news for the UAE. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai has announced that military service will now be compulsory for all men between the ages of 18 to 30.
Men without a high school diploma will be obliged to do 2 years of military service, whereas, high school graduates will serve a length of only 9 months. Women’s participation will be optional.
Sheikh Mohammed announced that the UAE army force will be made up of men who have completed their time in the armed forces and those who finished their national service.
The training will include military exercises and some will receive additional security training.
"The new law adds another layer to the national defense force to further protect our nation, secure its borders (and) preserve its achievements," Sheikh Mohammed said on his official Twitter page. He went on to tweet that the law has been put together to protect the homeland, its borders and its resources and gains.
The UAE is not the only place where changes are being made. In November, Qatar announced that all men aged 18 to 35 will be expected to undergo military service for the period of 4 months. University graduates will only serve a time of 3 months.
