Emeka Don, who wrote and vocalized the lyrics to ‘Give Us the World!’, believes his hip-hop release captures the essence of the city’s bid and makes the case for why Dubai should win.
His catchy tune goes: “Give us the world! The World Expo! Dubai next yo! 2020 let’s get it ’cause we’re the best, so everyone will see it - the beauty of UAE. I promise they cannot beat it. Believe it - you will achieve it! Why Dubai? The grace. The class. The innovation. The flair. And the people. Connecting minds, creating the future.”
Speaking from his home in New York, the lawyer-turned-singer told 7DAYS he would gladly pitch the emirate to the Expo judges himself if he could.
“I would tell them when it comes to business, when it comes to entertainment, when it comes to creativity, Dubai is unmatched,” Don said. “There are other places that do great things too, of course… I’ve travelled all over the world and I’ve seen a lot of great places and a lot of great things, but I’ve never seen a place that does it quite like Dubai in all aspects.”
The rapper also highlighted the emirate’s hospitable, safe and tolerant environment.
Emeka Don, who wrote and vocalized the lyrics to ‘Give Us the World!’ has rapped his support for Dubai's Expo 2020 bid.
Don visited Dubai for the first time last year to attend the Dubai World Cup. A YouTube video from his trip proved a huge hit with his fans, gaining almost 10,000 views.
He said: “From a distance you hear about it, but it’s much different when you are there in person. It’s unbelievable when you think about how it was some 40 years ago. Instead, it seems like something new is happening there every month - and it’s always bigger and better.”
But it’s not just the place, and the architecture and the aesthetics that moved Don.
“It was also the people - they were very international and classy,” he said. And Don believes Dubai’s win could help dispel myths about the Middle East in the West.
“One unfortunate thing about the West is that people sometimes form opinions based on loose or incorrect information or just on what they see on the news. There is a certain amount of ignorance when it comes to the region and what happens there, and the quality of life,” he said, adding that people he spoke to were very interested in the laws and rules and how they were different to the US.
“Some of the questions I get are ‘what do they even do out there?’ or ‘are there camels walking around?’. They haven’t seen the Maseratis, the class, they haven’t seen the buildings… Dubai’s win would help change that.”
“It’s a great place for the world to come and feel comfortable. Hospitality is a very important factor - it’s not just about who can host it, it’s also about what they can offer the people who are coming.”
Culled from 7days.
Yeah, Alhamdulillah we eventually won it. Thank you too, Mekka!
